Cisco được biết đến là hãng chuyên về thiết bị và giải pháp mạng. Cisco đã tạo dựng sự thống lĩnh và sức ảnh hưởng trên thị trường bộ định tuyến, bộ chuyển mạch, dành cho cả doanh nghiệp và các nhà cung cấp dịch vụ mạng.
HP, đối tác lâu năm của Cisco, bán lại bộ phận thiết bị định tuyến và chuyển mạch của mình kèm theo mảng máy in, máy tính doanh nghiệp, thiết bị lưu trữ, máy chủ trung tâm dữ liệu của hãng. Dell cũng vậy, nhưng với qui mô nhỏ hơn so với HP hay IBM.
Thành công và tham vọng của Cisco nhận được cả sự ngưỡng mộ và không ít lời chỉ trích. Tính đến năm 1997, trên thị trường không có nhà cung cấp nào có thể thay thế Cisco trong việc cung cấp thiết bị định tuyến cho các nhà cung cấp dịch vụ. Và với sự phát triển của Internet, Cisco trở nên thống lĩnh thị trường thiết bị định tuyến, chuyển mạch. Để cạnh tranh với Cisco cũng như tạo thêm lựa chọn cho khách hàng, một số nhà cung cấp viễn thông lớn đã hỗ trợ cho việc hình thành hãng Juniper. Những năm sau đó, Juniper chiếm 30% thị phần từ Cisco.
Khi thị trường bộ định tuyến và chuyển mạch tăng trưởng chậm lại nhưng vẫn ổn định, Cisco chuyển hướng nhắm đến những thị trường “lân cận” để thúc đẩy tăng trưởng. Một trong số đó là thị trường trung tâm dữ liệu với các sản phẩm máy chủ và thiết bị lưu trữ.
Cisco cũng nhắm đến các giải pháp ảo hóa như một cách để “kết nối” sự thống lĩnh về mạng trung tâm dữ liệu với việc tính toán, lưu trữ. Đầu tiên, Cisco nhảy vào thị trường SAN (mạng lưu trữ), sau đó là thị trường máy chủ, kết hợp với các bộ chuyển mạch của mình trở thành nhà cung cấp cơ sở hạ tầng CNTT cho trung tâm dữ liệu.
Dĩ nhiên, với những chiến lược này, Cisco khiến HP, Dell, IBM phải “nóng mặt”. HP đáp trả bằng cách khôi phục lại bộ phận kinh doanh mạng ProCurve, mà hãng “bỏ quên” bấy lâu nay, và sau đó tiến hành mua lại 3Com, đối thủ lâu năm của Cisco, với giá 3 tỷ USD (~ 60.000 tỷ đồng).
Về phần Dell, hãng tăng cường các mối quan hệ OEM với Brocade, và sau đó mua lại hãng cung cấp bộ chuyển mạch hiệu suất cao Force10 Networks nhằm bổ sung cho danh mục đầu tư mạng trung tâm dữ liệu của mình. IBM thì gia tăng hợp tác với Juniper Networks, hãng giúp Juniper phát triển trung tâm dữ liệu Qfabric và chuyển mạch đám mây (cloud fabric switches), thực hiện OEM các bộ định tuyến của Juniper. Sau đó, IBM mua hãng BLADE Network Technologies, chuyên về chuyển mạch phiến trung tâm dữ liệu, cũng là đối thủ của Cisco.
Mặc dù Cisco có nhiều đối thủ cạnh tranh, nhưng theo các nhà phân tích, Cisco vẫn sẽ duy trì vị trí thống lĩnh trên thị trường chuyển mạch trung tâm dữ liệu, và HP, IBM, Dell sẽ vẫn duy trì vị trí dẫn đầu các nhà cung cấp máy chủ trung tâm dữ liệu.
